Haruchika beauty blackening her teeth

Haruchika, dates uknown

beauty blackening her teeth before a mirror

signed at lower right, Haruchika hitsu, ca. 1860-70s

chuban yoko-e 9 1/8 by 10 1/8 in., 23.1 by 25.8 cm

In another example where the frame of a mirror suggests a window, in this composition the 'real' beauty is framed by a round vignette against a rosy pink ground which intersects with an ornate black and gold framed mirror.

Although we as of yet have not found a record of an artist using the name Haruchika, it is possible that this is an alternate name for the artist Toyohara Chikaharu (1848-?) who was a student of Yoshu Chikanobu (1838-1912).
