Koitsu

Tsuchiya Koitsu

1870-1949

Lake Kawaguchi
(Kawaguchi-ko)

signed at right, Koitsu, with artist's round seal Shin, the print title on the right margin, Kawaguchi-ko, followed by the date, Showa hachinen gogatsu saku (made in Showa 8 [1933], May), with publisher's seal Doi Sadaichi, printer's seal Goto and carver's seal Yamada, ca. 1933

oban yoko-e 10 1/4 by 15 3/8 in., 26.1 by 39 cm

The combination of the publisher seal of Doi Sadaichi (d. 1945) with the 'offset' carver and printer's seals of Goto and Yamada are indicative that this is an early impression dating very closely to the publication date of 1933, as the printer Goto was active with Doi only until 1936.

Ross Walker and Toshikazu Doi, The Catalogue Raisonne of Tsuchiya Koitsu, 2008, p. 55, fig. 3.8 (for same combination of seals); pp. 285-286 (on publisher seals); pp. 310-311 (for chart on active dates for printers and the use of carver's blocks)

price: $ 1,200
