Shunko II
Katsukawa Shunko II, fl. ca. 1770s-90s
Teahouse Waitress Near the Shore

hashira-e (pillar print) mounted as a hanging scroll (possibly original mounting) with bamboo rollers, signed Shunko ga, ca. 1780s
hashira-e 25 1/4 by 4 1/2 in., 64.2 by 11.5 cm
overall 42 1/2 by 7 1/4 in, 108 by 18.4 cm
The Shunko signature on this print uses a different kanji for 'ko' than that of the well-known Katsukawa Shunko (1743-1812), and also different from the 'ko' used by Katsukawa Shunsen (1762 - ca. 1830), who also used the go (art name) Shunko. Jacob Pins records only one hashira-e from the collection of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston which appears to relate to this example and bears the same signature, but he identifies the artist as Shunko II, not to be confused with the previously mentioned Katsukawa Shunsen who is more commonly identified as Shunko II. However, the MFA does differentiate their print as being by a different Shunko and have attributed it to Katsukawa Shunko I.
