This composition depicts minister of state Fujiwara no Arihira (891-970) and his assistant going to the palace through a driving rainstorm. It is said Arihira never neglected his duties, regardless of whatever inclement weather obstructed his travels. He served Emperor Murakami (926-967), who his daughter would later marry. The couple would give birth to Prince Munehira, who in 980 would take the Buddhist Orders and become a monk at the Onjoji.
