signed Kunichika hitsu with the artist's Toshidama cartouche, publisher's seal Tsujikame han (Tsujiokaya Kamekichi of Kinkido), combined censor and date seal Ushi-shichi, aratame (year of the ox [1866], 7th month, examined)

The actor Ichimura Kakitsu IV (Onoe Kikugoro V, 1844-1903) is in the role of Momonoi Wakasanosuke from the play Kanadehon Chushingura (The Syllabary of Loyal Retainers), popularly known in English as the Forty-Seven Ronin. Wakasanosuke is a lord who was insulted by the villainous Ko no Moronao. Their fight set the stage for Moronao's fateful confrontation with Enya Hangan, which results in Hangan's death and the vendetta against Moronao for which the play was named.
