oban tate-e 14 1/8 by 9 5/8 in., 35.9 by 24.6 cm

Onoe Kikugoro III (1784-1849) was remembered as a flexible actor, and is perhaps the first kaneru yakusha, that is an actor able to perform any kind of role whether it be male or female, good or evil. His adeptness performing the quick hayagawari costume changes earned him the moniker the 'man of a thousand faces.'
