This is a hand-colored copy of the design, but it is apparently not based on the final key-block proof but of an earlier drawing. The sharp-eyed art sleuth may find a few minor variations to the black outline of this version.

Both of these watercolors are the final designs (included sizes) of the woodblock prints of the same titles. Binnie used these versions to create the hanshita (traced copy used to make the keyblock), and also to prepare the intended palettes of the prints.

Binnie created the New York Sunset and New York Night watercolors in preparation for new designs for his ongoing landscape woodblock print series (in homage to Hiroshi Yoshida), Meisho To No Tabi (Travels with the Master). The woodblock prints were completed on commission from Scholten Japanese Art in time for our first exhibition of Binnie's work.
