Uehara Konen, 1878-1940
Blue Landscape with Village
sealed Konen, followed by the number 393, and with publisher's mark of Kobayashi Bunshichi, circa pre-1923
4 3/4 by 7 1/8 in., 12 by 18 cm
Konen was a student of the painter Kajita Hanko (1870-1917) and of Matsumoto Fuko (1840-1923), who was the uncle of Takashi Shotei (1871-1945). The similarity with Shotei's work is striking; for comparison with other small format blue landscapes of the same period, see Shimizu Hisao, Syotei (Hiroaki) Takahashi, 2005, cat. nos. 101, 238, 239, 244, and 267.
