Blue Smoke
(Seien)

kappazuri (stencil print); the title on the bottom margin in blue, Seien, pencil numbered and signed, 29/40 Paul Binnie 1995, with red oval artist's kanji seal, Bin-ni, September 1995

koban tate-e 9 5/8 by 6 3/4 in., 24.5 by 17 cm

This is the second state of this design. The first edition in a dark red palette, Kemuri (Smoke), quickly sold out its edition of 40 impressions. As is his custom, the artist only issues additional editions of a design with significant changes to the palette and/or blocks. In this case, he added a bokashi puff of smoke around the mouth, and shortened the hair at the forehead, lengthening the trail of smoke wafting beyond the margins.
