Kakunen Tsuruoka rolling hills with horse

Kakunen Tsuruoka, 1892-1977

untitled (rolling hills with horse)

watercolor on paper, signed and dated at lower left, Kakunen Tsuruoaka 43, with artist's oval seal Tsuruoka, mounted in black and gilt carved wood frame, 1943

sight: 14 5/8 by 21 1/4 in., 37.3 by 54 cm
frame: 23 1/8 by 29 1/2 in, 58.8 by 74.8 cm

This ethereal landscape with a single horse dwarfed by the rising mountain is the only recorded painting by Kakunen from Poston which includes a living being. It is for this very reason that the family chose this work, above all others, to frame and hang in their home.
