Kakunen Tsuruoka, 1892-1977
untitled (dark sky over mist on mesquite and brush)
watercolor on paper, with artist's seal Kaku, ca. 1942-44
15 1/8 by 21 3/4 in., 38.3 by 55.4 cm
Kakunen focused most of his paintings on twisting mesquite rising from mist lingering on desert brushland. It is unclear if this dark sky is falling or if the faint light beyond the hills represents the moment before the day breaks over the horizon.
