Kakunen Tsuruoka, 1892-1977
untitled (dark clouds descending over brushland)
watercolor on paper, with artist's seal Kaku, ca. 1942-44
15 by 22 5/8 in., 38 by 57.5 cm
This composition with ominous storm clouds exemplifies Kakunen's mastery at exploiting the way watercolor pools and seeps into the paper fibers in a manner that is suggestive of the tarashikomi (lit. 'dripping in') technique adding layers pigment over wet ink.
