dragonfly on lotus

Kakunen Tsuruoka, 1892-1977

dragonfly on lotus

ink and color on light brown cardstock; signed Kakunen ga with artist's round seal Bokutei, with oval Tsuruoka family seal on verso, n.d., ca. 1920s

20 1/2 by 10 in., 52 by 25.5 cm

The beautiful pooling of green, black, and brown pigment on the surface of the lotus leaves is an example of Kakunen's masterful use of tarashikomi (lit. 'dripping in''), a technique of manipulating layers of wet paint and ink which is associated with traditional Rinpa-style painting.
