Kakunen Tsuruoka, 1892-1977
two figures crossing bridge in rain
ink and color on paper, signed Kakunen with artist's square seal Kakunen, and oval Tsuruoka family seal on verso, n.d., ca. 1930s
19 5/8 by 6 3/4 in., 50 by 17 cm
This lovely painting exemplifies Kakunen's commanding dexterity with the brush. On the one hand he could produce highly detailed paintings of birds (a subject beyond the capabilities of many artists), and on the other hand he was able to let go and convey an evocative and moody landscape by combining subtle washes of color and a minimum of confident brushstrokes.
