Moorhens in the Rain- Two Watercolors with Keyblock Proof

both watercolors on paper signed Soseki and sealed Soseki, ca. 1920s

both paintings approximately 15 1/4 by 10 7/8 in., 38.8 by 27.5 cm
keyblock proof 15 1/4 by 10 5

These two watercolors offer a fascinating glimpse into the creative process. It seems likely that the more simple watercolor is the earlier work, and that the artist then continued to develop the composition with the introduction of gradations of brown at the edges of the lotus and the vertical streaks of rain resulting in a far more interesting design which is closer to the finished print published by Kawaguchi Jiro in the 1920s.
