Although the artist usually begins with a conté drawing which he converts into a keyblock proof and then hand colors, in this instance Binnie began with a rough sketch followed by this detailed drawing in colored pencil which he used to create this pen and ink drawing before the keyblock proof, and then adapted the original drawing into this color separation.
