1839-1892

Preparatory Drawing of 'One Hundred Ghost Stories from China and Japan: Nikki Danjo Naonori'
(Wakan hyaku monogatari: Nikki Danjo Naonori)

ink on paper with touches of grey and rose wash; with artist's signature in double-gourd shaped cartouche at lower right corner, Ikkaisai Yoshitoshi ga, ca. 1865

15 3/8 by 11 in., 39 by 28 cm

Compositionally, all of the elements of this design correspond with the final version of the print, suggesting that this is a near 'block-ready' drawing. The series title cartouche and the text cartouche have yet to be completed including details on pronunciation and the addition of the author's (Kikubatei Roko).
