Stanton MacDonald-Wright was one of the first American artists to work in the Synchromism style- an early abstract expressionist style which sought to synchronize music and with color. This print is from his last major project he produced with the American woodblock print artist Clifton Karhu living in Kyoto. MacDonald-Wright designed twelve prints inspired by classical Japanese haiku (seventeen-line poems). The subject of this print is based on the famous poem by Matsuo Basho (1644-1694).
