Richmond Irwin Kelsey was born in San Diego, California in 1905. He studied at the Otis Art Institute and the Los Angeles Art Center School, where he began painting and exhibiting watercolors and oils. He then enrolled at the Santa Barbara School of Art under Frank Morley Fletcher, from whom he learned woodblock printmaking. Kelsey produced a series of woodblock prints early in his career, and joined the staff at Santa Barbara in the 1930s. In 1938 he became an Art Director at the Walt Disney Studios where he painted backgrounds for animation films. He was also a childrenÂ’s book author and illustrator.

Although it is not known if he ever travelled to Asia, the silhouette of the boats in shadow is certainly evocative of the Sailing Boats variant woodblock prints published by Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) in 1926.
